It has always been a pet peeve of mine to go to tourist places in the off-season, so I couldn’t resist visiting Crete in winter. Maybe it’s because I’ve always lived in the Riviera Romagnola and I don’t find winter so terrible at home, on the contrary.

The beaches of Falasarna and Elafonissi

With the rental car I had already procured, I planned to go and see two of the most renowned places on the island: the famous beaches of Falasarna and Elafonissi.

At Falasarna beach (also featured) it was me and this cat. Unfortunately, many photos from this trip came to a bad end.

The idea of arriving there early with no one else there, when these are famous for being crowded in the summer, tickled me quite a bit. The day was clear and crystal clear, for the winding road through the mountains I met many goats and two young deer probably amazed to see a human being so early on the morning of January 1.

Already seeing it from above is a spectacle, walking in Falasarna beach is even more so. the same I must say of Elafonissi where arriving there later I found a few more humans. In the first beach, on the other hand, it was just me and a cat taking a bidet. Elafonissi, not far away, is famous for the color of its sand , which is pink.

As a teenager, thanks to the memorable song Rapput by the very young Claudio Bisio and Rocco Tanica, I had formed a very stereotypical image of the Greek islands, which change so much in high and low seasons anyway. I prefer them with few people.
