Italiano (Italian)
I made the trip to Thailand and Cambodia in July 2015. Not the perfect time, but the only one I was allowed, and it went well. It lasted two weeks, and I did it solo. I met and made friends with many people, of these only one Italian and right at the last since I chose areas considered less touristy. I used public transportation, practically all of it possible:
My itinerary included:
- the ancient capitals (Ayutthaya and Sukhothai)
- Chiang Mai and the North (Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle).
- Angkor in Cambodia (based in Siam Rep )
- Ko Phangan
- Bangkok
In this google link the itinerary.
The why of traveling to Thailand and Cambodia
The idea of traveling to Thailand came to me because I had not yet been to a very distant, non-Western, solo country. I had been the previous year to Jordan, but only one week and found it really peaceful. I had been to the U.S., but that is still Western world, albeit quite different from the European world. In my opinion to really get out of the comfort zone, and to really immerse yourself in a new world, you need at least two weeks.
The night before I left, closing the window shutters, I had lingered on the giant moon looming over my terrace, thinking that in a few hours I would find it the same, but on the other side of the world; a part of the world where I had never been. It took me a while to fall asleep from excitement, and when I woke up my mind clung to somewhat blurry images: I was in a rickety bus typical of the Third World along with a smiling, long-haired blonde girl.
