The tour to the Islas Ballestas was the start with a bang of a stellar trip, but if I had chosen the itinerary, I would have given more space to Lima, which we visited rather hastily instead.

Tours in the Islas Ballestas

Gigantic and mysterious lines on the ground like the most famous ones in Nazca, these draw a cactus
We saw these from the boat along the way and they were reminiscent of those in Nazca that we would see in the following days

These small islands are called the Peruvian Galapagos because of the very large population of birds of all kinds and sea lions. They are close to the city of Paracas, which in turn is just south of the capital. The islands can be visited from the sea with a tour on small boats, from where you can also see a glimpse of the famous Nazca drawings.

The animals of Peru

Seeing them cuddling was not anticipated

Peru is one of the most diverse countries I’ve been fortunate enough to visit; there are ancient cities and ruins; diverse landscapes and you can encounter many animals in the wild and not just the camelids that are the animals in Peru that you see the most

  • llama (many are domesticated)
  • alpacas (smaller)
  • guanaco (very difficult to spot)
  • vicuña (even smaller)

In this link the explanation of the differences

Birds of the Islas Ballestas
In fact the islands are mainly a bird colony so much so that at one time there was actually a guano collecting industry

Landscapes

After the tour in the Islas Ballestas, we went from seascapes with both sheer rocky and sandy coastlines, to different deserts and up to mountainous landscapes. Few people know that there is also sandy desert in the country, it feels like being in the Sahara. In Huacachina which is a village located near an oasis surrounded by high dunes, we snowboarded in the sand. While in another oasis characterized by olive trees, I was able to taste olive honey; it is black in color and has a unique flavor.

The drive along the Pacific Ocean coast is spectacular

The trip was spectacular because of the landscapes we traveled through. Although the distances are long, I think it is a shame to overdo the internal flights and even the overnight bus trips. Peru, and South America in general, should also be seen from the window. Better if of a public transport, so you can also get into the climate of the country and observe the people with their colors.

The penguin has always been my favorite animal once at carnival I dressed up as a penguin and won the best mask award custom made dress by my mom
