One of the many myths I had as a traveler was to see New York with snow, and I was lucky because I caught it on the very last day. Instead I was definitely unlucky with accommodations, but sleeping decently and cheaply in New York is impossible.

Sleeping in New York
Sleeping in New York is extremely expensive, probably more than in any city in the world.
The first 2 nights I slept near Central park, around there I could not avoid passing by the Dakota Hotel where he had lived and in front of whose entrance my absolute myth, John Lennon, was murdered.

I thought the lodging was bad, but at least there was only me in the double room, and best of all, there was a fantastic bakery across the street where I ate some unmatched Christmas pudding, a typical Christmas dessert.
The king of terrible housing in my life

After the night I spent in the station in Boston and then in the bus on my escape for the NBA game, I spent the last in a resounding dump in China Town. I had already had 2 nights on the road and 5 in hostels (both in Chicago and the first in New York), and before another night on the plane I opted for a single, which turned out to be the worst accommodation, not so much of that trip, but probably of my entire life.

The singles had been made out of a corridor with sheetrock walls; for the long one there were several pairs side by side; all around was a narrow passageway and obviously inside there was space only for a tiny bed and feet. The most significant aspect, however, was the ceiling, which consisted of a wire mesh (like a chicken cage); this way you received no surprise from above from the other guests, but you definitely heard everything.

Dulcis in fundo I brought home bed fleas that plagued me for several weeks.

New York with snow

On the last day it snowed and I went back to Central park, gorgeous with snow. Just like in the movies, though alone, I strolled through the tree-lined avenues.

I took mental trips thinking I was inside a Woody Allen movie. But most of all I became ecstatic contemplating the silence that snow gives even to such a noisy city and how much it can change it.
