Getting sick while traveling can happen, it has happened to me several times and it is never good. It is even worse if you are in a bad hotel, among the worst for me frequent budget accommodation.

Stop at Agia Napa, adda passà ‘a nuttatta

In the pre-covid era, no one paid attention to who was coughing or sneezing. If it happens now, on certain occasions you can only do so much. On the crowded outbound flight, I found two guys on either side of me sneezing and coughing the whole time; I had no alternative to crossing my fingers, strong in the fact that I had already had both covid and flu in the previous months.

The church of Ayios Lazarus in Larnaka These are very touristy and particularly expensive places especially the stores Caught unprepared by a super cold I had to pay 10 euros for a 10 pack of tissues 1 euro a packet

But no dice, having arrived in Agia Napa after a series of quick stops (the most significant in Larnaka), I began to feel weak and feverish. I threw myself into bed in a very bad room and took a tachipirin. Toward evening I pulled myself together and tried to walk around the small town, at least to have dinner.

Agia Napa is an extremely popular tourist resort, in the summer full of people who want to party in the many clubs, but in the winter I found it to be dead.

Not too bad, as I dragged myself to the sandwich shop of a famous international brand (the alternatives were only local establishments of that kind) to gobble down a sandwich with difficulty.

Getting sick while traveling, but too feverish to look for a blanket

The interior of the Orthodox church of Ayios Lazarus I really like the interiors of Orthodox churches especially the less excessive and more collected ones like this one

By 8:30 p.m. I was back in bed, was cold and found that there was not even a blanket, but I was too crumbled to go down and argue with the receptionist.

Already, as soon as I arrived, I had noted the inefficiency of the service; they told me I would have to wait to check in and motioned me to take a seat, pointing to a filthy floor. When I returned, there was a rowdy crowd in line, so I calculated that it was not even worth risking who knows how long to get some attention and maybe a blanket.

I put on everything I had, hugged a pillow and curled up as tight as I could, hoping to feel better the next day.

I was worried that I would have to scale back my trip. After a few hours, what I had imagined to be a very unusual Christmas full of beautiful nature with a long drive awaited me.

Rocky beach in Agia Napa, with clear blue sea and an island that can be seen in the distance.
Indeed the sea in Agia Napa is very beautiful, but perhaps in summer too crowded you appreciate it less even if you swim in it. Getting sick while traveling also involves not being able to do everything. Here I was sick but didn’t miss that much.
