In touring Marrakech I became definitively convinced that I was turning my ways around. In fact, with this trip I finally, and perhaps belatedly, abandoned the ‘idea of trying to be without a connection. Too much trouble had happened to me in the past and I resigned myself to the fact that it is too convenient, both to have the ability to call, but especially the use of maps; less important to me is the sharing in real time.
Getting around Marrakech some more
I walked around the medina with a general idea of where I wanted to go and with my earpiece giving me directions; without following it every step of the way, and without keeping my eyes on the screen.
It was a time of Ramadan , but I had no problem with the food, and it must have been because very touristy area. If I had not known I would not have noticed except for some varied museum hours.
Wandering around Marrakech is really atmospheric in the early morning, when the usually cramped alleys full of people and goods become spacious alleys with cat owners, the majority of stores closed and only a few merchants starting to open.
But technology has obviously caused losses as well. There are also a few preachers left in the square, or tellers of myths and legends; considering how numerous they were in the past they are almost extinct. With the advent of new technologies where everything is on the phone, there has been no generational turnover. The few that remain speak in Arabic, therefore, they are not for tourists. Still, it is fun to see them animate and gesticulate with passion even though they do not understand what they are saying.

Trip to Essaouira
One day I took the bus (excellent service, including online reservation) for the day trip to Essaouira. I enjoyed it so much, both for the bustling but not chaotic downtown; for the waterfront promenade with its many surfers; and for the bustling marina with boats coming in, fish being sold freshly landed, and flocks of seagulls with the usual cats on the alert to take advantage of every opportunity. I noticed several Westerners who looked like residents and it is hard to blame them. An interesting aspect of the trip to Essaouira is also the three-hour drive through the desert, which confirmed the idea I have of visiting the rest of the country better.
