You may remember a famous commercial about the wrong company; especially when traveling, a type that really annoys me is the negative type.
This area of the world is not only nature and colonial cities, but also Mayan archaeological remains.
Copan (Honduras)
I chose this itinerary because it was very varied, and because it also included part of the trip to Honduras and 5 days at sea in Belize.
The leg of the trip In Honduras was very interesting even though we stayed there just two days to visit the Copan ruins located near the border. The site is surrounded by nature, there are beautiful remains of pyramids and also stelae, carved on both sides. It is also splendid because of the nature surrounding it and especially because of the many macaws, which are present almost everywhere almost like pigeons are with us.
By now accustomed to our Shengen, we take it for granted that border crossings should be a formality. This is not true, especially on land borders, in countries that are structurally a bit more chaotic. Even less true in countries where there is a lot of passage of non-legal products such as in Central and South America. As we waited in the bus, without even having to put in much effort, I began to feel like throttling someone in particular.
The wrong company
An emblem of my experiences there wrong company, it reached its peak just in the Honduras portion of the trip. On a trip it is very annoying to find yourself a negative character, of those who always have to argue about everything, who maybe think they can always have their say about everything. These people annoy me in everyday life, and I avoid them. If you get one on a group trip, and you’re locked in a bus, it’s hard not to have to put up with them.
This person began every sentence with a no; and for that matter, he was negative about everything. The straw that broke the camel’s back was the enunciation of her theory on how the Guatemala-Honduras border should be organized. Was she an expert on customs? No, she was an expert on everything.
Semuc Champey
After the Honduras portion of the trip, we returned to Guatemala. Semuc Champey are very clear natural pools in the middle of the forest. They are spectacular although quite strenuous to reach and where you always have to be very careful where you put your feet because the high humidity Makes everything extremely slippery. You can swim there, although they are very crowded. You can also see a super panorama from the mirador, where I did not go, however, because the very steep descent did not suit my footwear.
To get there, a long dirt road, also very steep and full of hairpin bends, is traveled by 4-wheel drive minibuses. The drivers are local and know the route perfectly. Constant jerking is inevitable for the passengers; in fact, I would say it’s fun even if the occasional ravines we were skirting were a bit scary. Here I lost patience with the negative character called Miss No, No and No. She had gone from being an expert on customs to an expert on 4X4 minibuses. I suggested that she have more respect for other people’s work, especially if it was rather complicated like theirs.
What pranksters
By then it had become obvious that I did not like her, which was obviously quite common in the group. After a few days, with one of the guys we got along better with instead, we came up with a joke with some other girls. We said that I was actually her boyfriend and that we had decided not to leak it. This news generated the greatest astonishment, it seemed to be the most unbelievable thing possible, but after we very painstakingly managed to convince them, we unveiled the joke, which was followed by a moment of great hilarity. So I reiterate that it was not all the wrong company.
I promised myself to play this game again for real: go on a group trip with a companion, pretend we can’t stand each other, and at some point surprise everyone!
