Illuminated skyscrapers at a street intersection in Chicago
In many peoples imaginations it is the classic image of a US city In reality visiting them reveals how different they are

The trip I called traveling in the USA in winter was not in my plans, I had little time to accomplish it, but I consider it one of the most successful. After being there in the summer, I had many reasons for wanting to return to those parts in the winter.

New York is also very scenic because of the water here from the pond in Central Park In my first Traveling in the USA I visited it very thoroughly this time just for some aspects from a new perspective

Why traveling in the USA in the winter

Snowy basketball playground on Chicago's lakefront
Basketball has always been one of my great passions as well as a job I never pass up an opportunity to capture a basketball court around the world especially one in an unusual situation this one was on Chicagos Long Lake

Christmas in New York is a myth that dozens of movies and songs, willy-nilly, have ingrained in the heads of all Westerners; I also had two others about the U.S., seeing Chicago in winter and attending an NBA game.

My first Traveling in the USA as well as my first trip outside Europe was to the US cities on the West Coast plus some in the South that I took in July 2004. It was a beautiful trip but a summer trip because only then could I stay away the 3 weeks I had considered as the minimum to cross the Atlantic.

It had been 13 years, the world is so big that it was not among my priorities to go back there, but sooner or later I would have liked to go there in the winter, even to watch a professional basketball game since I have played and coached basketball all my life.

I stayed away 6 days alone and moved by public transportation in December 2017 and visited:

  • Chicago
  • Boston
  • New York

This is the map on my googlemaps

In this link is the episode of my podcast Strangeness on the Road in which I recount verbally, and in Italian, when it happened to me in New York.

Chicago inspired me to visit in winter and my expectations were confirmed

In Houston we have a problem

The famous route 66 starts right from downtown Chicago I will do it another time with more time I am young

Houston we have a problem is the famous phrase uttered in 1970 by NASA astronauts during a lunar mission. In my own small way, I too have had reason to be able to state something similar. In the summer of 2017 I had been to Guatemala/Honduras/Belize on a group trip, and on our return we had a stopover in Houston. Our problem was not as bad as for those poor astronauts, but it led me to change my future travel plans.

Due to technical problems they delayed our departure by something like 9 hours, even for me who loves airports it was a heartbreak; I was quite fed up with my fellow passengers, plus I had nothing left to read. The good thing was that the United we were flying with gave us a voucher, I think of $100, which in fact was only valid for domestic routes within the United States since the international routes it does in alliance with other companies.

Framing everything!

So many street art works are around cities this one in Chicago

It was not a lot, but I was intent on taking advantage of them, and so I decided to go to the U.S. at the first opportunity to take vacation, that is, over the next Christmas period, and fulfill my three dreams/goals mentioned above. The most difficult thing was to book the basketball game because in both New York and Chicago there were no competitions scheduled in my possible eight days of attendance.

It can be said that the old buildings in Europe are more beautiful but these are not bad either

I decided to do something crazy that was later super successful and go to see Boston, look at you, right up against Houston. A total of 9 hours by bus, the overnight return; it was a fair stretch, but I had already been to New York and organized everything very well.

Next stop Chicago in winter, it is at its best in cold weather
